Google Consent Mode Troubleshooting with WPLP Compliance Platform

This guide aims to provide solutions to common errors that may arise during the Google Consent Mode integration process on your website.

This guide is for users who have implemented Google Consent Mode on their website. For instructions on setting up GCM, refer this document.

Check Google Consent Mode Status and How to Troubleshoot Issues #

Check and configure Google Consent Mode properly before diving into specific errors:

  1. Navigate to the WP Cookie Consent Plugin Dashboard and open Cookie Consent -> Cookie Settings -> Compliances tab.
  1. Scroll down the Google Consent Mode(GCM) section and find the Check GCM Status button.

  1. Click on check, the plugin will run a configuration check on your implementation and generate a report. If you see No Errors Detected, congrats you have implemented GCM successfully. If you see errors, view the troubleshooting instructions below:

If you encounter any error after running this check, select from the following common errors to see troubleshooting instructions:

No Tags Present

No Tag Present – No tags are found if either Google Tag Manager is not correctly installed on your website or GCM was not enabled.

a. Ensure you have copied the Google Tag Manager Scripts and pasted in the Script Blocker Section tab correctly.

b. Check if Support Google Consent Mode Toggle is turned on.

c. Make sure you clicked on Save Changes after performing both the steps mentioned above before performing the GCM Status Check.

Default Consent is Missing

This error arises when GCM is not turned on correctly.

a. Make sure you have enabled Support Google Consent Mode(GCM) toggle and clicked on Save Changes after doing that.

b. Make sure your default consent settings table inside GCM has at least one row.

Update Consent is Missing

 Update Consent command is responsible for updating tab behaviour upon user’s consent and is missing when Cookie Consent banner is not correctly setup.

a. Make sure you have turned on Enable Cookie Notice toggle under Compliances tab in Cookie Settings.

b. An accept button should be present in your banner. Check if the toggle next to the accept button is turned on under Design Tab in Cookie Settings.

c. Don’t forget to click on Save changes as well after making any change.

Default Consent set too late

This error might appear when your GCM tags fired before Default Consent was set. 

a. Make sure you installed Google Tag Manager in your website by pasting scripts in the script blocker tab only as specified in this documentation.

b. If you have installed GTM using any other way like GTM4WP plugin, kindly disable it to make sure GCM works correctly.
