Overview of the Plugin

We are dedicated to privacy and data security with the WP Cookie Notice Plugin (ePrivacy, GDPR, & CCPA) plugin, and we are delighted to be able to assist website owners all around the world with their cookie compliance needs.

The WP Cookie Notice Plugin (ePrivacy, GDPR, CCPA & LGPD) shows a cookie notice on the website to inform the visitors about the cookies used on the website. It allows them to accept or reject the use of cookies.

The plugin scans the website to get the list of cookies used and automatically configures the categories of known cookies. The admin can manually change the details of the cookies shown for user consent.

The admin can also add custom cookies (if needed). The cookie notice design tool helps customize the cookie notice per the website theme design. User preferences are saved as “wpl_user_preference” and “wpl_viewed_cookie.”

There is no universally applicable Internet privacy law. Instead, there are a variety of regulations in different parts of the world. Furthermore, each law has its own unique features and criteria.

We’ve put together a quick rundown of many online privacy rules organized by geographical location.

CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act) #

It gives users additional rights, including the right to be informed and the right to access the information you’ve acquired on them – but probably the most visible right offered to users is the right to opt out. From July 2020, the law will be fully implemented.

How to Get Compliant? #

  • You must warn users that their data may be collected and “sold” to other parties. Your website/app or privacy policy must additionally offer a “Do Not Sell My Personal Information” (DNSMPI) link, allowing users to opt out of any data processing activity that could be regarded as a “selling” of their personal data.

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) #

Describes how and when personal data should be processed lawfully (including how it is gathered, used, protected, and interacted with in general). It is likely the most well-known privacy law in the world, having been in effect since May 2018.

How to Get Compliant? #

  • You must comply with the disclosure and transparency requirements by providing detailed information to your users about how you handle their personal data.
  • You should also ensure you get your users’ consent (for cookies and other purposes) properly: consent should be freely provided, informed, specific, and unambiguous.

ePrivacy Directive (Cookie Law) #

ePrivacy Directive is a supplement to the GDPR, which governs the protection of the personal data of EU citizens. It addresses critical areas of electronic communication confidentiality as well as the tracking of Internet users in general. It has been in effect since 2002.

How to Get Compliant? #

  • You must display a cookie banner on your website to acquire users’ informed consent before storing and/or tracking non-technical cookies on their devices.
  • The cookie banner should offer a link to a thorough cookie policy and allow users to express and clearly agree to the policy.
  • You should also employ a technical cookie management solution to prevent non-technical cookies from being installed without the user’s agreement.

LGPD (Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados) #

LGP refers to Brazil’s General Data Protection Law, which regulates personal data collection, processing, storage, and use. It applies to companies processing the personal data of individuals within Brazil, regardless of where the processing activities occur. Key aspects of LGPD include the right to access, rectify, and opt out of personal data processing and strict rules on the use and storage of sensitive data.

How to Get Compliant? #

  • To comply with LGPD, website owners must implement security measures, obtain consent from users before collecting their personal data, provide access to data, and implement data deletion mechanisms.
  • It is also important to have a privacy policy and appoint a data protection officer.
  • Non-compliance with LGPD can result in fines and legal action.
